The 2024 Rebelle Rally: A True Test of Skill, Endurance, and Navigation

The 2024 Rebelle Rally stands as a testament to endurance, precision, and sheer determination. As the longest competitive off-road rally raid in North America exclusively for women, this event pushes participants to their limits across more than 2,600 kilometers of some of the most demanding terrain in the American West. From vast deserts and towering dunes to unforgiving mountain passes, competitors rely solely on maps and compasses to chart their course, embodying the true essence of adventure and resilience in motorsport.

Now in its 9th edition, the Rebelle Rally returned to Mammoth Lakes, California, with a fully booked roster of 65 teams ready to take on the challenge. As America’s premier women’s navigation rally, it continues to grow in prestige, attracting a diverse field of participants from around the world. A Grand Start in Mammoth Lakes The journey began with the Pre-Technical Inspection at The Village Plaza in Mammoth Lakes on October 9th. Open to the public, this event allowed spectators, sponsors, and supporters to meet the competitors, admire the vehicles, and gain insight into the competition.

The following day, teams faced the official Technical Inspection, a rigorous process ensuring all vehicles met the rally’s stringent safety and competition standards. From deactivating navigation systems to equipping vehicles with necessary safety gear, every detail was meticulously checked. Participants also received their maps, roadbooks, and tracking equipment, signaling the official countdown to the competition.

A Global and Competitive Lineup

This year’s edition welcomes 130 competitors hailing from the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, the UAE, Australia, and Austria. The age range of participants spans from 23 to 78, with 62 rookies stepping up to the challenge and 26 teams competing for the coveted Rookie of the Year title. Among the returning competitors, 68 bring previous Rebelle experience, including four seasoned veterans who have participated in every edition since the rally’s inception. Manufacturer Presence and Corporate Support The 2024 Rebelle Rally boasts a remarkable lineup of manufacturer-supported entries, with 21 vehicles competing across the 4×4 and X-Cross® classes. The 4×4 class features 15 manufacturer-backed entries from brands like Toyota, Ford, Land Rover, Jeep, and Ram, while the X-Cross® class includes vehicles from Kia, Honda, Ford, BMW, and first-time entries from Subaru and Toyota. Notable teams include partners such as TOTAL CHAOS Fabrication, FOX Trail Trust, and Iridium, as well as Magna International, which has entered two corporate teams. The INEOS Grenadier also makes its rally debut, represented by Warner INEOS Grenadier and a privateer team. Jeep and Toyota lead the manufacturer count with 17 vehicles each, followed by Ford with 15 entries. Land Rover, Subaru, Nissan, and Lexus also make their presence felt with a mix of corporate and privateer teams. Special Challenges and Sustainability Initiatives Exciting contingency programs add another layer of competition. The Pirelli Scorpion® Tire Challenge has drawn its largest-ever field, with 15 teams competing on Pirelli tires for a chance to direct winnings to a charity of their choice. Scrubblade, a returning sponsor, offers additional incentives with cash prizes for teams equipped with their wiper blades and supports the Team Spirit Award, a highly regarded honor within the rally. Sustainability remains at the forefront of the Rebelle Rally’s mission. Renewable Innovations has returned to power the event’s remote basecamps using cutting-edge solar energy solutions, ensuring an eco-conscious approach to off-grid endurance racing.

The Road Ahead The Rebelle Rally is renowned for its unpredictable and stunningly rugged course, which remains undisclosed until the competition begins. This year’s route incorporates three distinct basecamps and two demanding Marathon Legs, where teams must rely entirely on their own resources, without the comforts of basecamp amenities or penalty-free mechanical support. The final leg of the rally will unfold in Southern California, with two critical Marathon days playing a decisive role in the overall rankings. With breathtaking landscapes, intense competition, and a spirit of adventure that defines the rally, the 2024 Rebelle Rally is set to be an unforgettable journey—one where skill, endurance, and the pursuit of excellence take center stage.

Daily Report of the Rebelle Rally

Prologue (October 10th): The teams completed a 137 km circuit with various checkpoints, allowing them to refine their navigation skills.

Day 1 (October 12th): The route featured vast open landscapes and dry lake beds in Nevada, along with technical driving challenges. The day ended with the 4×4 team in the Jeep Gladiator Mojave leading the standings.

Day 2 (October 13th): The first of two “Marathon Legs” required teams to camp away from the comforts of base camp, navigating through breathtaking mountainous and desert areas of Nevada.

Day 3 (October 14th): A demanding 483 km route took competitors through the Desert Wildlife Preserve and the Ash Meadows Wildlife Preserve, in collaboration with FOX Factory Trail Trust, which promotes sustainable adventure.

Day 4 (October 15th): Teams encountered the first dunes of the competition, tackling a mix of desert and rocky terrain that put their sand-driving skills to the test.

Day 5 (October 16th): The competitors reached the iconic Johnson Valley in California, facing challenging checkpoints and rough terrain that tested the limits of their vehicles.

Day 6 (October 17th): Teams navigated the Glamis dunes, one of the most renowned and challenging terrains of the rally, covering a 290 km course with multiple checkpoints.

Day 7 (October 18th): The competitors completed the rally by traversing Slab City, Box Canyon, and Joshua Tree National Park, collecting the final points before concluding the competition in California.

Rebelle Rally Final Standings

The 2024 competition featured numerous veteran Rebelle Rally teams who are not only rivals on the course but also close friends. In the end, the 2024 Jeep Gladiator Mojave took the top spot with Team #129 – Nena Barlow and Teralin Petereit – claiming their third 4×4 class victory. Leading the competition in the second half of the rally, they maintained their advantage to secure the highest overall points as a team for the third time. The duo earned a custom trophy and $5,000 toward their 2025 entry fee.

The Jeep was one of two Bone Stock-designated podium vehicles, demonstrating that even a factory-stock vehicle can excel in extreme conditions. Team #150 Desert Roots – Shelby Hall and Rori Lewis – finished in second place with their Bone Stock 2023 Bronco Raptor, while Team #152 Chaos Finders – Becky Brophy and Samantha Barber – secured third place with their custom-modified TOTAL CHAOS Fabrication 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

In the X-Cross® class, the competition was equally fierce. Veteran Rebelles Carey Lando and Andrea Shaffer teamed up this year and claimed victory in their Team #204 2014 Subaru Outback. They battled closely with Team #200 Built Wild – Melissa Clark and Kathryn Reinhardt – who took second place in their 2025 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands Sasquatch, also earning the Bone Stock award for the X-Cross class. Team #205 BMW – Rebecca Donaghe and Syndiely Wade – rounded out the podium in third place with their 2025 BMW X3 M50.

Rookie Competitions

The 2024 Rebelle Rally saw one of its largest rookie classes ever, with 62 first-time competitors across 26 rookie teams.

In the X-Cross class, Team #203 Space Raiders – Jacqueline Space and Andrea Hale – took the top spot in their 2020 Subaru Outback, followed by Team #207 Wild at Heart – Ashley Bear and Audrey Keys – in second and Team #208 Trailsport Trekkers – Adia Raya and Madison Russell – in third.

For 4×4 rookies, Team #154 Trail Trust – Kristen Matlock and Ashleigh Ballas – secured victory in their 2023 Ford Bronco, with Team #120 Grit & Grace – Cara McClellan and Danielle Noonan – finishing second, and Team #133 Coding and Offroading – Mali Vander Leest and Sara Russo – in third.

Special Awards:

The International Cup is awarded to the highest-finishing team from outside the United States. Team #144 CanToy Divas – Sue Chapin from West Kelowna, BC, and Liza Tough from Peachland, BC – claimed this honor for the fourth time.

Several Rebelle partners also support competitors through contingency programs.

The Pirelli Scorpion® Challenge recognizes teams using Pirelli tires throughout the rally.

4×4 Class Winners: Team #139 Headings United – Mandy Brezina and Alex Gilman (2020 Jeep Gladiator).
