Back to the south of France: a visit to PSI Azalaï in martigues
Heading back to the South of France, not far from Marseille, to visit PSI Azalaï in Martigues. Join me as we explore an Azalaï camper mounted on a Toyota Hilux pickup.
Toyota Hilux with Azalaï camper
The Toyota Hilux is a classic choice for carrying a 4×4 camper. First introduced in 1968, it’s now in its eighth generation. While it’s not the top-selling pickup worldwide (that title belongs to the Ford F-Series), the Hilux remains one of the most popular platforms for expedition campers.
Renowned for its reliability and durability, the Hilux is a natural fit for overland builds and often finds itself in front of my camera.
The 2022 Hilux comes with two 4-cylinder diesel engine options:
- 2.4L D-4D (150 hp)
- 2.8L D-4D (204 hp)
Both are available with either an automatic or manual transmission (from the “Legend” trim level upwards). Like most modern diesel engines, they use AdBlue to meet emissions regulations.
For this review, we’re looking at a Hilux Invincible 2.8L (204 hp) with a 6-speed automatic transmission—a fully loaded version.
It has been upgraded with:
✔ Koni shocks for improved suspension
✔ BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires on Braid wheels
✔ Aluminum skid plate (N4 brand) and side protection
The rear underrun bar doubles as an air tank for tire inflation, connected to a high-performance EMS air compressor capable of delivering 128L/min.
Azalaï Camper for Hilux
If you’re unfamiliar with Azalaï campers, they are permanent, VASP-approved (legal for registration as a motorhome). If you’re looking for a removable camper, check out the Lababouch model instead.
For those needing a larger camper, PSI Azalaï also offers the Azalaï Truck for Mercedes Sprinter or Iveco Daily 4×4.
Key features of the Azalaï Camper:
- Fixed onto the chassis (original truck bed removed)
- One-piece monocoque design (fiberglass/polyester shell)
- Lightweight composite furniture
- Pop-up roof with fabric sides
- Three large windows with mosquito nets & blackout blinds
The fiberglass shell is built using a vacuum infusion molding technique, providing:
✔ Superior durability
✔ Waterproofing
✔ Excellent insulation
This marine-grade construction makes the camper highly resistant to damage. However, the process requires specialized labor, molds, and time—hence the higher price tag compared to assembled panel campers.
Azalai Camper weight
A common question: How much does it weigh?
The fully equipped Azalaï camper (without water) weighs 650 kg (1,433 lbs).
Since the original Hilux bed is removed, the final payload capacity remains around 440 kg (970 lbs).
