The Hilux Invincible, equipped with its powerful 2.8L D4D engine, is an ideal companion for 4×4 expeditions, effortlessly covering extensive off-road distances. A wide array of accessories and equipment is available for the Hilux, simplifying its customization. In the Geneva area, I encountered this double cab fitted with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, freshly assembled by the team at Off Road Accessoires.
Hilux Invincible Double Cab Preparation
Firstly, it’s important to note that the Hilux Invincible version comes with the larger engine option—a 2.8L D4D—whereas the standard Toyota pickup is typically powered by a 2.4L D4D. This upgrade provides a significant increase in power, jumping from 150 hp to 204 hp. Specifically, the 2021 model in question has been further enhanced by Toyota Switzerland to 230 hp through an available power box at the time of purchase. For reference, this power box is likely neither available nor approved in France. I’m considering relocating…
Before receiving its raid and travel equipment, Off Road Accessories looked at the suspension by changing the original one with an Old Man Emu (OME) lift kit + 600 kg kit with a load gain increased to 3500 kg in total instead of the original 3.2 t and it is noted on the registration document! A document attests to the legality of his suspension kit.
To protect the underside of the pickup, we find armor from N4 Off Road. A snorkel is installed in the workshopand then we take care of the wheels by installing 8×17 triangular rims and BF Goodrich tires in 265/70/17.
For the comfort of night driving or in difficult conditions, lazer lights are integrated into the grille with a pecially designed kit, these are Triple R 750 Elite. We also have a winch in the bumper.

Alu-Cab Canopy Camper Installation
The bed of the Hilux is fitted with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper. This setup combines a hardtop with an integrated rooftop tent featuring a pop-up roof. Alu-Cab, renowned for its robust designs, has been offering this type of pop-up roof for several years, much to the delight of travelers. It’s worth noting that this product is primarily suited for warm and temperate climates; if you’re planning trips to colder regions, installing a heater inside the canopy is advisable. In this particular build, as you’ll see later in the article, a heater has indeed been incorporated.
After installing the canopy, ensuring proper sealing is crucial to prevent dust and water ingress. The team at Off Road Accessoires is well-versed in achieving these precise finishes.
A bracket has been designed to receive Maxtrax sand plates on the right side. And grids for fixing additional quipment are secured on the inside of the side openings.
Interior Layout and Features
A plywood floor is first installed over the entire bed surface, onto which aero rails are added to secure equipment and luggage inside. A custom U-shaped furniture assembly is then crafted. Clients can collaborate with the workshop to determine the type of furniture needed and its arrangement.
A pump supplies the external shower, drawing from the canopy’s 50L water tank. All canopy camper openings are protected by removable mosquito nets, allowing for insect-free ventilation without complete closure.
A second folding table, sourced from Front Runner, is mounted on the rear door. Additionally, a Shadow Awn is installed on the left side of the canopy, providing shelter from the sun or inclement weather. On either side of the canopy’s rear door, there are mounts suitable for jerry cans or other equipment.
To be able to take advantage of the interior space to eat, work or relax, a removable table is installed, with its swan neck foot, it can be moved, turned easily so that it finds its place when needed, to store it simply unscrew the top.
The Dometic CFX fridge is mounted on the right and remains easily accessible.
Electricity in the canopy camper
An auxiliary battery is installed (Green Power AGM 100A battery), it will power all the accessories. The cables are pulled and the recharge is managed by an IBS separator coupler and a DCDC charger . In addition to the charge via the alternator, a Victron 175W monocrystalline solar panel (1485x668x30) is added and glued to the roof, it is managed by a Victron MPPT 75/15 Smartsolar regulator.
On the power supply side inside, we obviously have 12V but also 220V thanks to the Victron Phoenix 12/375 inverter, 375W pure sine. An external 220V socket also allows you to power yourself in a campsite or near a socket.
Heater for the Hilux camper canopy
Juris and his teams installed a WEBASTO Air Top 2000ST heater with programmable clock option and altitude kit. It has a heating power of 2 kW. Here is our Toyota ready to face harsh temperatures.
Water
A pump supplies the shower, it draws from the canopy’s water tank which holds 50l.
This thoughtfully prepared Hilux Invincible with its Alu-Cab Canopy Camper is ready to tackle off-road adventures, offering both comfort and functionality for extended journeys.
