A Grenadier equipped with an Alu Cab Silenus pop-top roof is quite a rare sight. Equip’Raid (France) is the first outfitter to install this pop-up roof on an Ineos Grenadier and took it to the alpine pastures of Valloire for the off-road and travel expo. Let’s see this roof conversion.
Ineos Grenadier
This nearly new Grenadier Trailmaster is powered by a 3.0L 6-cylinder TD engine from BMW, delivering 248 hp. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

Its off-road capabilities are impressive, with great approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and solid construction. The quality and robustness of the vehicle, including its axles, are remarkable. The spacious interior (nearly 5 meters long and 2 meters wide) allows for customization. The cockpit-style dashboard gives it a fighter-jet feel, adding to its rugged charm.
However, one drawback is the steering feedback—it doesn’t return to center naturally, requiring the driver to assist it. Nonetheless, if you can afford it, you’ll own one of the last true off-roaders on the market.
A modern 4×4 packed with off-road capabilities, though the steering takes some getting used to.
The aviation-style button console is a nice touch, and the Grenadier offers great interior space for future customization.
Ineos Grenadier Pop-Top Roof : roof conversion
For the first time, an Alu Cab pop-top roof has been fitted onto a Grenadier. Equip’Raid installed a roof top conversion prototype from the renowned South African brand Alu Cab, hinting at an exciting final version. Even as a prototype, it is already outstanding.
As expected from Alu Cab, the structure is exceptionally sturdy, featuring reinforced aluminum construction. The roof opens and closes quickly thanks to gas struts and an elastic band around the perimeter, ensuring the tent fabric retracts smoothly. The structure is insulated with foam for both thermal and acoustic benefits. A large strap at the rear makes closing effortless.
Once raised, the roof significantly increases the interior volume. For sleeping, it features a 75mm high-density foam mattress (2.4m x 1.3m). The bed consists of two parts, with one section that folds up to allow easy access to the “upper level.”
LED lighting is installed at the front, center, and rear, along with two reading lights in the sleeping area.

The roof includes rails for mounting accessories or a side awning—an ingenious addition! However, note that the vehicle height increases by about 20 cm, and the roof weighs slightly over 120 kg. That said, with the Grenadier’s powerful and torquey engine and upgraded suspension, there’s no compromise on comfort or handling.
While the weight may seem significant, it’s comparable to installing roof bars, a rack, and a standard rooftop tent on an unmodified vehicle. Additionally, the pop-top design minimizes added height and eliminates the need to repeatedly install and remove a rooftop tent between trips.
The pop-top roof transforms the upper space into a fabric sleeping area with three windows (equipped with blackout covers and mosquito nets), a signature feature of Alu Cab products.
The rear opening features a built-in awning, which is practical for rain or sun protection.
Grenadier Customization
Before hitting the trails, this Ineos Grenadier received several modifications:
- Suspension: The vehicle was lifted by approximately 30mm with firmer springs and Koni Heavy Track shocks.
- Alu Cab folding table: Installed on the inside of the rear door, it serves as a workspace. A sliding wooden shelf doubles its surface area.
- Lazer LED lights: Integrated into the front grille for improved night visibility.
- Aluminum MOLLE panels: Covering the rear windows, these allow accessories, bags, and gear to be mounted while also protecting the vehicle’s contents.
At present, the interior remains unfinished, but the available space easily allows for custom-built furniture, a removable table, and a bench.
Tires: The Grenadier is fitted with BF Goodrich All-Terrain (AT) tires.
How Much Does the Alu Cab Silenus Pop-Top Roof Cost?
The Alu Cab Silenus pop-top roof for the Grenadier is priced at €11,000 (indicative pricing at the time of this article).
The Grenadier belongs to a disappearing breed—the true off-roader. With its pop-top roof and rugged build, it’s an ideal overlanding vehicle, combining practicality with legendary off-road performance.
