How to Have Fun in Ultra4 Racing on a Budget?
Previously, I introduced the Nissan Patrol Stock Class for Ultra4 racing. Today, let’s take a look at a 2001 Land Rover Discovery Ultra4 Stock Class, built by Team Field Fabrication. I had the chance to meet them at the King of Britain 2023.
Emma & Adam’s Discovery Land Rover Ultra4 Stock
Emma and Adam first got into off-roading through local 4×4 clubs. Later, they joined Synchro Gearboxes to race at Bovington in 2021. Competing in Ultra4 Europe for the first time, they had an incredible experience and were instantly hooked.
Team Field Fabrication: from club 4×4 to Ultra4 Racing
Wales is often wet!
On their way home, they decided to buy a Discovery and jump into Ultra4 racing. After finding a 2001 Land Rover Discovery, they built a custom roll cage, a requirement for racing in Ultra4 Stock Class. Over several months, they prepped the vehicle and debuted at Kirton in 2022, finishing 4th in their class.

In King of Britain 2022, they placed 5th. After the race, they decided to upgrade the vehicle for better performance and skipped Bovington that year to work on their build. Airdale Autoparts supported them by supplying parts for the Discovery.

- Rear axle locked with a spool differential
- Reinforced stock axles
- Heavy-duty side protection (a must for competition)
2023 Season: A Winning Year!
With support from family and friends, they placed 2nd at Cown Quarry and then won the King of Britain 2023, despite the rain and tough conditions. Not only that—they finished 1st overall in the Stock Class Championship! Clearly, their modifications paid off.
Their budget-friendly Discovery proves you can have a great time in Ultra4 racing without spending a fortune!
Cost Breakdown:
- Vehicle cost: €700
- Full build (roll cage, seats, tires, suspension, etc.): ~€17,000

The Land Rover Discovery runs a classic Td5 engine, upgraded with:
- Hybrid turbocharger
- Larger intercooler
- Custom ECU remap by Alive Tuning
- Output: ~180 HP

- Light bar with 4 auxiliary lights
- Updated headlight clusters
- Winch for recovery
Suspension & Tires
- Lof Clutches reinforced SMF clutch (for better transmission durability)
- Fox 12″ remote reservoir shocks (2.5” diameter)
- Britpart springs (2” / 5 cm lift)
- Toyo OPMT 315/75/16 tires on Mach 5 wheels
