Departure from Icht — we’re off towards M’Hamid for a 390 km stage. Morocco has experienced some bad weather over the past few days. We were spared during the first special stage, but the end of today’s route looks a bit more complicated, with some areas where the oueds have overflowed. Some of the assistance teams with large semi-trailer trucks will also have to take a detour to reach M’Hamid, as some bridges have been washed away by the force of the water.
Before the first neutralization and for about twenty kilometers beyond, the special mostly follows fast tracks — sometimes undulating or winding — but they shouldn’t pose any particular issues.
Today’s special is then neutralized, and therefore shortened, because an oued a bit further on is truly filled with water. A few brave competitors will end up wading through it for a while.
After that, the terrain gets rockier, with some areas of crevasses where it’ll be important to stay alert.
A bit of off-track navigation is also on the menu, before the riders cross small dunes, oueds, and increasingly sandy landscapes.
