Rebelle Rally: the Future of Off-Road Electrification

Rebelle Rally pioneering the future of off-road electrification. In 2020, to mark its fifth anniversary, the Rebelle Rally introduced the Electrified Designation, welcoming EV and PHEV vehicles into the competition within their respective 4×4 or X-Cross classes. Today, these vehicles are an integral part of the event. Renewable Innovations not only ensures efficient charging for EVs and PHEVs but also powers the rally’s base camps with sustainable solar energy.

Electrified Innovation and Sustainable Base Camps

The Rebelle Rally is the longest all-female off-road navigation challenge in the United States. Spanning 10 days and 2,500 kilometers, the competition takes teams through breathtaking landscapes, rugged dirt roads, trails, dunes, and off-road vehicle areas across Nevada and California. Teams of two—a driver and a navigator—surrender their mobile phones, GPS, and internet-enabled devices, relying solely on a compass, maps, and a roadbook to reach checkpoints of varying difficulty. It is not a race of speed but one of precision driving and navigation.

Designed as the ultimate proving ground for production vehicles, the rally features two primary classes: 4×4 and X-Cross, with minimal vehicle modifications allowed. Since 2020, the organization has meticulously developed the Electrified Designation, presenting a unique challenge for electric (EV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and hybrid vehicles. These electrified teams do not compete in a separate class but directly within their designated category, with allowances for rapid charging along the course.

From the moment we envisioned the Rebelle Rally, we knew it would be the ultimate test for electrified vehicles, and we have worked tirelessly to make it a reality,” explains Emily Miller, founder of the rally. “Providing mobile fast charging allows these vehicles to compete in standard classes.”

The Electrified Designation: A Game-Changer

The rally is meticulously structured to accommodate EV and PHEV vehicles, with careful planning for range management and charging availability both on the course and at base camps. This initiative is currently limited to a select number of production vehicles.

Rebelle Rally and Renewable Innovations: Leading Sustainable Charging

Electrification is the next frontier in the automotive world—an idea met with resistance in certain sectors, but not at Rebelle. From the start, this rally has embraced forward-thinking solutions.

A key partner in this vision is Renewable Innovations (RI), a leader in green energy solutions and the official sustainability partner of the Rebelle Rally. RI delivers clean energy anywhere, anytime, supporting vehicle charging and powering the base camps entirely with solar energy.

While EV technology is advancing rapidly, much of the focus has been on urban areas with short travel distances and abundant low-power charging stations. The Rebelle Rally presents a stark contrast, covering 2,500+ kilometers of rugged terrain over eight days.

I’ve always wanted to include EVs and hybrids in the rally, but it wasn’t feasible without a partner like Renewable Innovations,” shared Emily Miller. The Electrified Designation debuted in 2020 as an experimental category with just two entrants. The goal was to create a real-world proving ground for electrified vehicles. “This is a testbed,” Miller emphasized. “It’s important for the evolution of EVs and for the entire off-road industry.” With sustainable energy solutions, pioneering vehicle technology, and a commitment to innovation, the Rebelle Rally continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in off-road electrification.
